Rhode Island A to Z: Coloring/Learning Book
Published in Paperback by Donna Atwood Design (15 November, 2001)
Average review score:

Kids seem to really dig this
A perfect and fun way to learn about Rhode IslandEven though I have lived in New England for years, I learned a great deal about Rhode Island from RIAtoZ. The illustrations are charming, and the text makes this much more than a typical kids book. It's written from the perspective of someone who knows and truly loves Little Rhody. There should be a book like this for every state in the Union!!
Great book!We had Adam come to perform his Acme Miniature Circus at our Theatre in Brookline MA. He brought some books to sell, and I wanted to comment on how great the books are. Our patrons really loved them. We get a lot of kids and parents as patrons, and they all thought the book was fabulous. We are not even in Rhode Island! The book is entertaining, informative, and well worth getting.

Breaking the Rock: The Great Escape from Alcatraz
Published in Paperback by Ariel Vamp Press (June, 2001)
Average review score:

Breaking the rocki think that this is a good book i would reccomend it to all.
Eyewitness on AlcatrazI think it was a great book. I would reccomend it to everyone. People of all ages would love this book and could probably get more into knowing about Alcatraz.
Amazingly detailed account of the most famous prison break!Having read and seen everything I could get my hands on about the Acatraz breakout, this book provided yet MORE interesting details. Frank Morris was literally a genius and he and the Anglin brothers successfully? busted out of the most famous "escape proof prison" of them all. From details like his nicknames in prison: "Frankie" and "Ace" we also learn about who was on guard that night and various lapses on the part of the prison staff which lead up to the breakout. In addition, there are many never before published photos of the island and principals involved. The author was a little girl living on the island at the time and gives other tidbits about life there for both the staff and prisoners. While her opinion is that the "Tablespoon Trio" did not make it, she also leaves the door cracked open for the reader to draw their own conclusions. Truly a diamond in the rough for anyone wanting to read about the awesome triumph of the human spirit under the most extreme circumstances!

Explore the Virgin Islands Fifth Edition
Published in Paperback by Manatee Press (February, 2002)

Useful book and very practical!Having lived on St. John for 20 years, it was fun to learn new information about this special island from Explore the Virgin Islands. Mr Pariser has hiked the trails and met the people. His book is the most personalized and comprehensive guide I have read. It is a must for anyone visiting S. John. Pariser's most complete guide is unique and fits easily into your beach bag or backpack. If you're planning on visiting the USVI , and St. John in particular, be sure to take this guide along!
excellent resource for ALL the Virgin Islands!Having been to the British Virgin Islands and getting ready to go to the American Virgin Islands, I was quite impressed with the depth and scope of Mr. Pariser's fine guidebook. I can recommend it to any pre-Virgin or post-Virgin traveler alike!
Highly recommended(Planeta.com Journal) - This new guidebook covers all the angles for visitors to the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix). Harry Pariser is one of our favorite authors and has also written about Costa Rica and Barbados. The travel essentials are well documented. Harry points out destinations for the nature tourist such as the St. Croix Aquarium and provides a guide to local plants and animals. Excellent!

For the Good of Mankind : A History of the People of Bikini and their Islands
Published in Paperback by Micronitor/Bravo Publishers (01 March, 2001)

a breath of very fresh airThis book was an eye opener. It makes you wonder why this event that happened so many years ago in the middle of the Pacific has been buried for so long. This is not a cut and dry history, this book is a very readable journey through a culture that is unique. The author lets us know who he is, so it enables the reader to understand the person who is doing the interviews. That was a nice and unexpected touch. I found the book to be thought provoking and would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in studying the history of the Pacific.
A Very Worthwhile BookMy father was stationed in the Pacific during the nuclear testing so I grew up hearing so much about the islands. I enjoyed this book because it gave me a sense of what it must be like to live in such a beautiful place, yet at the same time having to deal with so much tragedy. What surprised me the most was how entertaining and how easy to read this book was. It really gave life to the way people must be and must think in the islands.
A Unique PerspectiveI found this book to be remarkably unique and refreshing as the author has found an interesting way to allow the islanders to tell their own story through interviews and vignettes about the islands.

Into the Shadows Furious
Published in Hardcover by Presidio Pr (15 December, 2000)
Average review score:

A comprehensive history of the New Georgia campaignMr. Altobello's book does justice to a previously overlooked pacific campaign. Situated chronologically between Guadalcanal and Bougainville, it has become a footnote in history. It, unfortunately, was not a very well run campaign, lasting much longer and costing much more in men and material than anticipated. The reasons for this are several - inadequately trained, poorly led troops,a terrible attack plan that was made worse with modifications, poor intelligence, and a worthy opponent in defense. In all honesty, in 1943, the south pacific theater was low on the list for appropriations, most army troops available were national guard divisions with little or no combat experiance, and the navy was somewhat limited in its' support ability due to enormous losses at Guadalcanal - specifically no fleet carrier support. So, this campaign was a painful learning experiance for theses services ,and learn they did, with the much more successful campaigns in '44-45. The author has obviously done extensive research on this campaign and no facet of it is not well covered. I highly recommend this book to persons wanting in depth coverage of the Solomons campaign or someone with particular interest in the New Georgia campaign.
The Way it WasI participated in this operation and was a member of the lst Raider Bn. The author was very detailed in his various reports of the battles and accurate. His description of the battle fields and terrain were exactly what I remembered. He wrote about the "grunts" their feelings and miseries - the heroes and those not quite as heroics. He pulled no strings for marines or soldiers or sailors. He called the shots. He was so detailed in his reporting that I swear he must have been there. I recommend this to veterans of that campaign especially. You will never know what was going on over there, even if you were there, unless you read this book.

The vivid, powerful story of an almost forgotten campaignBrian Altobello's Into The Shadows Furious is the vividly presented story of the American battle to drive out the Japanese from New Georgia after the U.S. armed forces had finally secured Guadalcanal in the spring of 1943. The Japanese airbase at Munda on the island of New Georgia was a vital target and the focus of the Army's 43rd Division. The Japanese commander, Major General Sasaki, had prepared a series of strong defensive positions and roadblocks on the trails east from Munda directly in front of the American advance. The ensuing combat in difficult terrain slowed the Americans long enough that General Sasaki managed to evacuate the bulk of his forces. Into The Shadows Furious is compelling reading and a superb addition to the growing library of World War II Pacific Theater with its vivid, powerful story of an almost forgotten campaign that took a tremendous toll in blood and lives.

Kensuke's Kingdom
Published in Hardcover by Scholastic (01 March, 2003)
Average review score:

A Superb Book!I simply loved this book! No other book can compete with it not even Harry Potter. The book is great for 10 upwards. If you like travelling, exploring, playing football, sailing, painting, learning from other people and making things, then this is the book for you. It all started with the arrival of a letter that changed the lives of Michael's Family in turn made the parents lose their jobs. After many harsh months of poverty, the father gets an idea of sailing round the whole world with a sailing boat called "Peggy Sue." The family battles through storms and towering waves but most of the time loves doing fun things onboard. (let me go to the point, I'm writing too much) Soon afterwards we find Michael on a tropical island in the Pacific, where we find out that it's inhabitated by an old man called Kensuke,a Japanese. They both teach each other new things. Michael teaches Kensuke how to speak English while the other teaches him how to be resourceful. That's not all. At one point, each one had a story to tell. Stories on how they got stranded on the island. This makes it more amusing. We also find cute creatures called orangutan. Well there's too much to tell about the book. If you find this book, buy it, it will be a treasure for your library.
Faboulous!!hi, my name is sandy jones. i read this book when i was 9 and the only thing that stopped me from reading it, was to sleep. it is a faboulous book for all ages.
Kensukes kingdom - my favourite bookWhen i was forced to read this book for a quiz i thought that it would be very boring. Boy was i wrong. It is my favourite book, i have read it several times since and it is so good that each time i read it i have to read it all in one night, i can't put it down.
When Michaels parents are made redundant, they buy a boat, The Peggy Sue, and sail round the world. When they are in the pacific ocean, Michael and his dog, Stella Artois, fall over board whilst Michaels parents are asleep. They drift onto an island, but they can't find any food. Michael expects that they will die of hunger, until someone on the uninhabited island leaves them food. Who is this kind person? How will Michael get home?

This book would be good for both boys and girls. This Island Isn't Big Enough for the Four of Us is about the boys against the girls. The girls keep teasing the boys and the boys try to get them back but keep failing. One night the boys try to be sneaky and take down the girls tent. They thought the girls weren't around but the girls tricked them and cought the boys. They really scared them away. The boys were scared that the girls were going to see their little gingerbread tent. The girls ended up catching them and really laughed at them. The war between the boys and girls is hilarious. The boys are always trying to show off but the girls are always are always beating them. So the boys decide to put them to the ultimate test. They challenge the girls to race them up the hill. Then they have to grab the flag and race them back to the tree house. Who will win?
hilarious pageturnerI got this book when I was 9 and I loved it immediately for its phantastic adventurous plot and twists. I think it is the best book I had as a child, making me laugh from the first page to the second last. It is so hilariously funny I still love to read it today - I'm 22 now and passing it on to my little niece. I know she will enjoy it as much as I did...
A Time to LaughWhen Scott and his friend Pete think that they are going to a deserted island for five days they don't know whats in store for them. On the way to the island, Pete and Scott fall out of there canoe, they get laughed at by two girls. Scott and Pete know that they now have to get along on an island with two girls and find a way to get them back.
I liked this book because of all the pranks, jokes, and skrew ups that go on between the boys and girls. There is also a mystery on the island that Pete and Scott must find out. I reccomend this book to anyone who has a sence of humor and adventure.

Anne of Avonlea: An Anne of Green Gables Story (Illustrated Junior Library Edition)

Average review score:

Anne of the IslandIn Anne of the Islnad, the character that I have grown to love and become familiar with, grows up and moves on to college. With college, comes new friends and new romances too. The only part that continued to annoy me was how Anne was rejecting everybody who asked her to marry. However, Anne learns through her failures and to my contentment, ended up with the one person whose heart truly belongs to her.
Admirer's of Anne of Green Gables Won't Be Disappointed~If you loved the first novel in the series, Anne of Green Gables, you won't be disappointed with it's sequel, Anne of Avonlea. Continuing where Anne of Green Gables left off, we meet up again with our kindred, bosom friend Anne, as she has graduated from Queens, and begins her teaching position in Avonlea. Living at home with Marilla at beautiful Green Gables, Anne & Marilla find themselves the caretakers of six year old twins, Davey & Dora. As Anne embarks on a classroom full of new students, and life at home helping to care for the twins, L.M. Montgomery provides us with more delightful stories and hijinks with our favorite characters of Avonlea. Mrs. Rachel Lynde is still up to her old ways, Diana remains Anne's dearest bosom friend, and we meet some new characters too. What does the future have in store for Anne & Gilbert Blythe? Anne of Avonlea is full of the magic and charm that one can expect from L.M. Montgomery. The ending will leave you yearning for the next in the series~
A Timeless ClassicMaud's "Anne" series has captured my heart since I was a young girl. I can relate to Anne because we share a lot of the same characteristics. We are both hopeless dramatists and romantics. Anne is as hilarious as she is touching. I know I will share this beautiful story with my own daughter some day. A MUST READ!!

The Island Keeper
Published in Paperback by Delacorte Press (November, 2001)
Average review score:

A book about finding yourselfWonderful book that I discovered in junior high. Several years later I bought a copy and this novel has become one of a treasured few I read again every year. The central character (indeed, practically the only character for most of the book) grows so much during her experience that you remember her life changes long after you put down the book. As always, great fast-moving, realistic storytelling from Harry Mazer.
Great BookI loved this book, it was great. I was reading it for school and i lost my copy! I have to buy two more, one for me and one for my teacher! I love how Cleo's character evolves and how she thinks. I recommend this book for everyone!
Cleo is tired of being fat and lazy, so she runs off.I really enjoyed this book. I bought it a week ago and finished it in 1 day. It was so intresting. Odd how someone like Cleo would just run away. She uses so much of her resources that its so amazing how she survives. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes nature, geography, etc. Actually, it's good for anyone practically.

Island of Lost Luggage (First Book Awards)
Published in Paperback by University of Arizona Press (September, 2000)

personal and politicalThis collection is among my favorites published in recent years. Janet McAdams lyrically links the personal with the political. Her work is engaging, memorable, passionate, yet not didactic--some poems will even keep you awake at night. Many poems reward multiple re-readings. I'm already looking forward to her next book.
Wonderful stuff! This Island of Lost Luggage is wonderful. Janet McAdams's poems are lyrical and gritty at the same time, swollen with life, drenched with place, and she never seems to take the easy way in or out. Highly recommended!
A Great BookAs a poet myself, I can only stand in awe of the work in "Island of Lost Luggage." Janet Mc Adams is a major talent. I've turned my initial envy of her gift into a goad to write better and wider myself.
Highly recommended.
